Hoax - Second 7" (Youth Attack)

I often avoid reading a punk band's lyrics, usually because they are pretty inane. This is fine. I think we all agree you don't have to be an Oxford graduate to be the lyricist of a hardcore band, but when the lyrics are good it can increase tension and hatred, or sometimes in this case self-hatred. Hoax has some pretty great lyrics. I got that old familiar spark I felt at age 15 when I first started listening to this shit.

And that's just the lyrics. These four songs demean and abuse you while are simultaneously self-abusive as well. We are drowning in the same cesspool together, but keep your distance. The music is simple, but this depressive intimidating wall of aggression hits hard. Sincerity is achieved unlike many of the try-too-hards in bands these days that desperately attempt to convey how fucked up or crazy they are. Hoax is legitimately fucked up.

So I end this by touching on some cliche territory. Hoax represent why I like punk in the first place. This is a home for freaks and weirdos (see the lyrics: "we're both ugly puny shits"). People that have trouble functioning in the real world. This is not a gimmick.

and remember, "a true friend pulls the trigger"

  6. I fucking love how you feel the need to tell us what age you were when you first started listening, insecure much? You have a lot of growing up to do, friend.

    Band rules.

  7. I'd let Mitch respond to this, since he posted Hoax, but I don't think he'd care to.

I think you're assuming that he was talking about "cool" Youth Attack bands or something when he mentioned getting into this kind of music when he was 15, however that's not the case. You're attaching a weird self-consciousness to this post that it doesn't have. It's not like he's saying "I bought the Nazti Skinz 7" in 2007, please don't think I'm a poser."

  10. Hey Jack. I wrote this blog post. The reason I mentioned the age I got into punk is because 15 years later this Hoax 7" stirred emotions in me I haven't felt since then, and I think that's worth mentioning as it's a testament to how powerful this shit is. I am not trying to impress anyone here, but feel free to interpret it however you like. I'll say that judging from your response, maybe it isn't me that has some growing up to do. Take care, i'm going to go listen to some Void demos I got a hold of when I was 6. L8
